Release Notes - Sidebar Overhaul

Overview

Today’s update improves the Sidebar. The goal was to make the sidebar more pleasant to use, fill some holes in functionality, and set up the sidebar for additional future features (such as favorites, which should be coming soon.)

Changes - The List

  • We removed the checkboxes in favor of highlighting the row instead to reduce visual clutter.
  • We only show the dropdown menu icon on hover to reduce visual clutter.
  • Organizations and Personal links are now wrapped in a ‘card’ component to better visually separate categories and tags from different organizations.
  • We added the ability to select all personal links (and thus exclude all of your organization links) while searching.
  • We made it more obvious what is going on when a user searches for links in a given organization, but has already selected categories and tags from that organization by disabling all list items in the given Organization and showing a tool tip when hovering over the given Organization’s categories and tags. This is a mouthful, so here is a picture:

  • We animate opening and closing folders, which looks pretty and also helps communicate what is happening when a bunch of stuff suddenly appears on screen after the user opens a folder.
  • We fix some issues with how mobile was displaying the sidebar due to drag and drop on certain browsers & devices.
  • We made Chrome respect scrollbar styling.

There is still more work to do, but I think these changes are a good start and point us in the right direction. Please keep the feedback coming.
